over the course of the next decade the national would release three more great albums: glorious blight, the slaughter of the soul, and the groaning/unsung. it's been a wild ride watching and listening to this band grow from a foursome in my dorm room to a five man wrecking ball occupying the national. i think these guys are going to keep amazing me for years to come and their younger fans are going to have even more of a magical experience watching their favorite band grow and evolve. i love high violets sensual, messy, dark brilliance that's a bit messy. the national's sound has gone from being a bit sloppy and housey (alligator and boxer) to being post-rock super-pro (glorious blight and the slaughter of the soul), but the impact that this band has had on me has always been the same - when the national was at their weakest (boxer and a few others), that's when high violet seemed most real and their biggest moments were the days after a disappointing show or the long months after graduation. i loved the idea of national being the band that taught me to live, but they were also the band that kept me alive through the hardest times in my life - the national is the best fuckin' band there is and national songs have been some of my most significant moments in life. high violet's influence continues to ripple through my life and my world, and it's only because of that band that I'm even writing this now. I'm going to miss the national for the rest of my life and hopefully I'll get to see them again somewhere in the world at some point. They're one of the greatest rock bands in the world, and the only way I can describe them is as the best band i've ever been in.
